ChiropracticThe word Chiropractic comes from the Greek words "chiro" (meaning "hand") and "praktikós" (meaning "to practice with"). Therefore, Chiropractic means "to practice with the hand". Essentially, Chiropractic is a system of healthcare that emphasizes manual and natural approaches to healthcare over surgical and medical approaches to healthcare. Doctors of Chiropractic utilize manual manipulation of joints and soft tissues to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Many Chiropractors also include treatment with Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy and Nutrition along with exercises and health and lifestyle counseling.A common confusion for patients when seeking Chiropractic care is that it often seems that no two Chiropractors practice alike. There is a division in Chiropractic between Straights and Mixers. Straight Chiropractors view the medical diagnosis of patient complaints to be unnecessary for Chiropractic treatment. Straight Chiropractors are concerned primarily with the correction of dysfunctional spinal joints by manipulation and do not "mix" other types of therapies. Mixer Chiropractors "mix" diagnostic and treatment approaches from Osteopathic, Medical, and Chiropractic viewpoints. Unlike Straight Chiropractors, Mixers believe that dysfunctional spinal joints are one of many causes of disease, and they incorporate mainstream medical diagnostics and employ many treatments including conventional techniques of Physiotherapy such as exercise, massage, ice packs, and moist heat, along with nutritional supplements, Acupuncture and herbal remedies. Mixers tend to be open to mainstream medicine and are the majority group. Dr. Brown would be considered a Mixer Chiropractor according to this distinction. What do Chiropractors mean by the term "Subluxation"? "Sub" means "less than", and "luxation" means "dislocation". So "subluxated" joints are partially, but not completely, dislocated. When Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer in 1895, the term subluxation was used to refer to joints that were thought to be out of alignment and causing pressure on the surrounding nerves. However, D.D. Palmer did not have the benefit of today's modern imaging techniques, as x-rays were only just discovered by Dr. William Röntgen also in 1895. With modern imaging techniques, we know now that even joints that are in normal alignment can cause irritation to not only the surrounding nerves but to the other soft tissues surrounding the joint. Although many Chiropractors (and the following video) still use the word "subluxation", Dr. Brown prefers the term "fixation" which more accurately describes the problem as we now understand it. Joints (whether they are misaligned or not) can become "fixated" or "stuck" as a result of injury, overuse or poor posture. The joints then become inflamed, causing pain, muscle spasm and irritation to the surrounding nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Chiropractic manipulation restores proper motion to joints and stops the resulting pain, inflammation and muscle spasm. What type of education and licensing do Doctors of Chiropractic have? A Chiropractic program consists of five academic years of professional education at an accredited college averaging a total of 4,822 hours of coursework, which is about the same as for Medical Doctors. However, instead of courses in medications and surgery, Chiropractic programs include courses in Manipulation, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Advanced X-Ray. Doctors of Chiropractic are licensed as primary care physicians in all 50 states, and State licensing boards regulate the Chiropractic profession just as in the Medical profession. There are 18 Chiropractic colleges in the United States and 44 Chiropractic colleges worldwide. What conditions are commonly treated in your office? Our average patient in pain is out of pain in 1-6 treatments. The fastest results are obtained by combining Chiropractic with Acupuncture and Physiotherapy. Dr. Brown is a board-certified Physiotherapist and includes electric muscle stimulation, infrasound, ice therapy and moist heat therapy to get the fastest results. Why do some Chiropactors routinely not perform any treatment on the first visit to their office? We don't know. Our priority is to begin treatment for your condition as soon as possible. Why do some Chiropractors routinely recommend 30-40 treatments or more? We don't know this, either. We do know that when you combine Chiropractic with Acupuncture and Physiotherapy, results are much faster. Why do some Chiropractors pressure their patients to have three treatments per week for the rest of their life? Again, we don't know. In our office, you can choose to return for maintenance treatments on a regular basis, or you can choose to return as needed. We will not pressure you either way. Are x-rays always required? Not in our office. Dr. Brown only orders x-rays if they are medically necessary for your specific condition. To insure our patients receive the highest quality digital x-rays possible, we have our x-rays taken at a professional x-ray facility, AZ-Tech Radiology & Open MRI. Even if you have no insurance coverage for Chiropractic, health insurance will normally pay for x-rays ordered by a Doctor of Chiropractic if the x-rays are taken at a professional x-ray facility. AZ-Tech accepts most insurance plans and has discounted prices for people without insurance. What if I need prescription medications? Although Doctors of Chiropractic are licensed as primary care providers in all 50 states, their scope of practice in Arizona does not yet include prescription medications. If you need a prescription medication, Dr. Brown works with medical doctors who will help you to obtain the proper prescription for your condition. What if I need an MRI or blood tests? Doctors of Chiropractic are qualified to order and interpret both MRI examinations and blood tests. Even if you have no insurance coverage for Chiropractic, health insurance will normally cover MRI examinations and blood tests ordered by a Doctor of Chiropractic. We utilize AZ-Tech Radiology & Open MRI for MRI examinations. Blood tests are done with LabCorp. ![]() Doctors of Chiropractic are qualified to order and interpret MRI examinations.
